Exploring Co-habitation within Quarter in transition
It’s at the outset of the area’s masterplan transformation, that hqLX is recasting Luxembourg City’s venerable 1968 firestation into a hybrid third space for contemporary residencies and spatial experimentation, situated in the to-become Wunnquartier Stade in Belair, the west of the city.

Informed by academic research and activated through playful encounters, hqLX operates as a living laboratory across 1,000 m² – a lieu de vie with quotidian Cafeteria service, where informal community life and outlying urban activities converge.

For FW2026, hqLX invites one cultural practitioner to join its collective residency format 4L « Quarterlife » for a period of three months, engaging with the proximate environments of the firehall site through a curious cycle of territorial mapping, recreative discussions, and public restitution.

4L takes the operational logic of the firestation as its methodological point of departure: just as a fire brigade trains ‘within’ in order to intervene ’beyond’, the resident moves from the project’s self-examining attitude – habitually relational, archival, spatial – toward extramuros deployment to reinforce public engagement.

This edition builds on the first residency SS2026 – which delivered hqLX’s prototyping atelier – and is pursuing its territorial examination to consolidate the founding step toward a longer-term academic framework at the space.

The continuous research as relay race
A cycle of repetition and deliberate intervals, sparking off unanticipated events.

a.  You are mapping the past anecdotes of an evolving quarter through archival review, institutional visits, and civic encounters: with CIS firefighters, National Archives, Service Sports, and others.
b.
You are engaging the field research within 4L’s weekly class co-hosted by your invitees and accompanied by thematic interlocutors, designing a collaborative agenda porous for related art collectives and cultural initiatives to react to.
c.
You are consolidating the cycle into a transferable cornerstone: a document of photographs, spatial protocol, or relational network deposit for the following resident.

Over 12 weeks, the resident is encouraged to co-produce three public-facing outputs: translating real neighbourhood data into imagined spatial narratives through an installative work, a performative piece or participatory games.
